Squirrel problems! They might look cute but ...

Squirrels become pests when they enter buildings or cause damage in gardens.

Inside homes, they can be noisy, chew insulation and electrical wiring, and contaminate loft spaces or water tanks. This can lead to costly repairs and potential fire risks.

In the UK, grey squirrels are an invasive species that cause significant environmental damage.

They strip bark from trees, harm woodlands, and outcompete native red squirrels. In gardens, they dig up bulbs, raid bird feeders, and disturb nests.

Once squirrels gain access to a property, professional removal and proofing are usually required to prevent repeat problems.

Rats

Rat Problems! a very common rodent ...

Rats are a serious pest that can damage property and pose health risks. They gnaw constantly, chewing through electrical wiring, pipes, insulation, and building materials, increasing the risk of fires and leaks.

Rats can spread diseases such as Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) and Salmonella through their urine, droppings, and bites, contaminating food and surfaces.

Rats often gain access to properties through broken drains and the sewer system, entering homes via toilets, waste pipes, or damaged pipework.

Effective control involves identifying entry points, improving hygiene, and using appropriate trapping or baiting methods. Professional treatment is usually recommended for active infestations.

Mice

Tiny rodents but it's important to know what type of mice are causing problems.

House Mouse

Commonly found inside homes

Once a house mouse gets into a property, it stays there. House mice do not live outside and will remain indoors to nest, feed, and breed.

  • Small, slim mouse with a grey-brown coat
  • Large ears and eyes
  • Body around 7–9.5 cm long, with a tail about the same length
  • Active mainly at night

House mice live inside walls, lofts, cupboards, and behind appliances. They breed rapidly indoors, producing several litters each year and have a distinct, strong musky odour. Because they never leave once established, infestations can quickly get worse without professional control.

Field Mouse

Usually lives outdoors but may enter homes temporarily

Field mice normally live outside in fields, gardens, and hedgerows. During cold weather, they may come indoors looking for warmth and shelter. If they find an easy food source, they may stay and breed.

Slightly stockier mouse with brown or reddish fur
White or pale underside
Smaller eyes and ears than a house mouse
Strong back legs – excellent jumper
Field mice often come and go rather than permanently nesting indoors.

For this reason, control usually involves trapping or the use of rodenticide that does not cause secondary poisoning to birds of prey or other wildlife.

A note on Field Mice, outside Rats and Secondary Poisoning

Field Mice are not House Mice. Field Mice will enter the home during cold spells for warmth and shelter. Bonus for them if they find you have an accessible food supply meaning they will stay and multiply.

House Mice never leave; Field Mice come and go. It is for this reason we will only trap them or use a rodenticide which is unlikely to cause secondary poisoning to birds of prey or mammals who eat field mice and rats.

The rodenticide we use for Field Mice and for outside Rats is called Selontra, for Rats in burrows we use Harmonix (which is also a Cholecalciferol bait like Selontra) These are licenced products for professional use only and cannot be purchased over the counter or online.

If you purchase your own rodent bait, please read and follow the label instructions —this is a LEGAL REQUIREMENT. Baits sold to the public can cause secondary poisoning to wildlife and pets if used incorrectly, so please think carefully about where and how they are placed. Retailers are not responsible for how products are used once purchased.
